Last weekend, Max Verstappen won his first race in a GT3 car. He stormed around the Nordschleife leaving the competition more than forty seconds behind. The four-time world champion shared the track with fellow countryman Calvin de Groot (21), BMW driver and now Nordschleife specialist. De Groot and Verstappen were also pit neighbors during the ninth race of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.

A glance into the pit lane immediately revealed where Verstappen’s pit box was. The doors of Emil Frey Racing’s garage had been open for a long time, making their weapon of choice, the Ferrari 296 GT3, visible to the public. De Groot’s car, a BMW 330i from SRS Sorg Rennsport, was proudly displayed outside in front of the box. Attention was also on the young Dutchman, who on September 27th could count on the support of many fans. Coincidentally, De Groot’s pit box was right next to Verstappen’s.

The area was swarming with people wearing Verstappen merchandise. “It’s great to see, and of course the atmosphere it brings,” De Groot says in an interview with gesprek met F1Maximaal.nl. “We see Dutch flags everywhere, Red Bull flags—it really makes it even cooler,” says the 21-year-old, clearly enjoying the arrival of the Formula 1 driver. “The championship is finally getting the attention it deserves.”
